Academic, Social and Emotional Perceptions of Gifted and Talented Students in the Elementary Setting

Research has been done comparing academic achievement of gifted students in diverse school environments, but little has been found about their perceptions as learners in these environments. The purpose of this action research study was to gain academic, social and emotional perceptions of six gifted and talented students in a self-contained elementary classroom. The author collected data through a perception survey, student and teacher interviews, and teacher observations. After collecting data for four weeks and analyzing it using the constant comparative method, the author found that the GT students were challenged in math, extracurricular activities were their favorite, they displayed positive peer interactions, and their perceptions of failure varied. This study will give insight to other educators about the perceptions of GT students in the elementary school setting

CARÁNGANO AND WOMEN: STORY OF AN INSTRUMENT THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION

This article describes the results of an ethnomusicological study on the carángano, a ground bow instrument played only by women in the small villages of the Colombia Caribbean region. Before the introduction of electricity, the inhabitants contemplated the full moon as the women played, danced and laughed to the sound of this instrument. This instrument is now almost extinct. In this article, the social function, organological structure and repertoire of this instrument are analysed. The relationship between the carángano and other ground bows such as the tingo-talango or the dumbu-kalinga and sekituleghe on the American and African continents is discussed. These musical practices require urgent attention since they harbour musical and identification values belonging to the Colombian Caribbean region while sharing cultural aspects which connect Africans and African descendants across vast distances

Incidence of the Work of Recoverers ex Officio in the Management and Integral Management of Solid Household Waste in the City Of Bogotá

La presente investigación busca evidenciar, desde una perspectiva socioambiental, la incidencia que tienen los recuperadores de oficio en el reciclaje y disposición final de residuos sólidos domiciliarios en la ciudad de Bogotá. Para el estudio de esto, se analizaron procesos institucionales, porcentajes de residuos sólidos domiciliarios aprovechados por los recuperadores de oficio, así como también la importancia de la labor emprendida por estos. Las metodología se basa en un enfoque cuantitativo, con carácter descriptivo, donde a través de la aplicación de herramientas se realizó la recolección de información que enmarcan análisis de contenido y revisión documental, las cuales permitieron evidenciar que la incidencia de los recuperadores de oficio dentro de la disposición final de los residuos sólidos es significativa, ya que evitan que estos residuos lleguen al relleno sanitario y se logre disminuir el grado de contaminación por desperdicio. Por otro lado, se expuso que la importancia de la labor emprendida por los recuperadores de oficio es alta debido no solo al uso y manejo del reciclaje para evitar contaminación, sino también debido al emprendimiento de la conciencia ambiental que estos manejan.The present research seeks to demonstrate, from a socioenvironmental perspective, the effect that recoverers have on the recycling and final disposal of solid household waste in the city of Bogotá. In that sense, institutional processes were analyzed, percentages of household solid waste used by the recoverers, as well as the importance of the work undertaken by these. The methodology is based on a quantitative approach, with a descriptive character, where through the application of tools the collection of information was carried out that frame content analysis and documentary revision, which made it possible to show that the incidence of the recuperadores of office within The final disposal of solid wastes is significant, as they prevent these residues from reaching the landfill and reduce the degree of pollution by waste. On the other hand, it was pointed out that the importance of the work undertaken by self-catering recuperators is high not only due to the use and management of the recycling to avoid contamination, but also due to the environmental awareness that they handle

Utopía - distopía: una mirada a la postmodernidad japonesa en -La caza del carnero Salvaje-(1982) y -El fin del mundo y un despiadado país de las maravillas- (1985) de Haruki Murakami

El rápido proceso de modernización y desencanto que trajo consigo la postmodernidad, hizo que los escritores japoneses tomaran un rol activo en la política. Haruki Murakami en medio del debate, realiza una crítica social más pasiva, en la que sus personajes demandan salir de ese sistema en la búsqueda de una identidad que representa una resistencia al proceso modernizador. De esta forma, el tema principal de este trabajo, es demostrar que las temáticas de dos de sus obras tempranas se relacionan con el postmodernismo, la resistencia de la modernidad impuesta a Japón y la búsqueda de una utopía prometida, en el que sujeto configura su realidad a través del simulacro creando escenarios solipsistas que distorsionan la realidad de la ficción.The fast-growing process of modernization and disenchantment that postmodernism brought along, forced Japanese writers to become active in politics. Haruki Murakami, as he debates, approaches the issue with a more passive social criticism, in which his characters demand a way out of the system, in a quest for identity that clearly represents a resistance of the modernist process. Generalización desde tareas aritméticas desempeño de una pareja de profesores de educación primaria en formación

Presentamos en esta comunicación parte de un estudio de casos que analiza el proceso de generalización que realizan futuros profesores de Educación Primaria cuando trabajan expresiones aritméticas que permiten la generalización. Para justificar la pertinencia e interés de este trabajo nos basamos en investigaciones internacionales relacionadas con esta área, las cuales nos han permitido perfilar el marco teórico de esta investigación. La recogida de datos se llevó a cabo en dos sesiones, en forma de entrevistas a dos parejas de estudiantes, en la que cada pareja trabajó conjuntamente en la resolución de cuatro tareas escritas. Centramos nuestra atención aquí en la producción de una de las parejas en la primera tarea. Partiendo de la comparación de los enunciados de generalización de ambos estudiantes, en cuanto a semejanzas y diferencias, presentamos algunas conclusiones acerca de su proceso de generalización

Caracterización Físico - Química y determinación de actividad biológica del aceite esencial de las hojas de Renealmina thyrsoidea Subespecie thyrsoidea

This study aimed to characterize the chemical and physical components of the essential oil from the leaves of Renealmia subspecies thyrsoidea, besides determining its antibacterial and antifungal activity to promote a precedent for the future realization of products from this plant. The essential oil of Renealmia thyrsoidea subspecies thyrsoidea was obtained by steam stripping. The physical properties were determined; refractive indices (1,481 g) and acid indices (22,581 g). The density value was 0,8685g. The chemical composition of OE was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance 1H (NMR1H). There were 49 compounds identified wich representing 95,33% of the oil. The most representative compounds were sylvestrene (28,78%), camphene (8,53%), β-phellandrene (6,46%), z-neoridol (6,37%), aristolochene (4,34%), adomandreno (3,69%), ɤ-copaene (3,13%). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by two spectrophotometric methods: test DPPH and ABTS assay. The IC50 values obtained were 20,86 mg/mL for DPPH and 1,33 mg/mL for ABTS. Antimicrobial activity revealed better inhibition results than strains of Gram (-) Escherichia coli ATCC8739TM and Pseudomona aeruginosa ATCC9027TM a MIC of 0,347 mg/ml for both. Facing the yeast Candida albicans ATCC10231 was 1,389 mg/ml and Candida tropicalis ATCC13803 0,347 mg/ml. The characterization of the chemical composition and determining the biological activity of the essential oil leaves Renealmia thyrsoidea subspecies thyrsoidea showed similar data against preliminary investigations with the same it.El presente estudio tuvo como objetivos, caracterizar los componentes químicos y físicos del aceite esencial de las hojas de Renealmia thyrsoidea subespecie thyrsoidea, además de determinar su actividad antibacteriana y antifúngica para fomentar un precedente en la realización futura de productos a partir de esta planta. El aceite esencial de Renealmia thyrsoidea subespecie thyrsoidea fue obtenido mediante arrastre de vapor. Se determinaron las propiedades físicas; índices de refracción (1,481 g) e índice de acidez (22,581 g). El valor de la densidad fue 0,8685g. La composición química del AE se determinó por cromatografía de gases acoplado a espectrometría de masas (GC/MS) y resonancia magnética nuclear 1H (RMN1H). Se identificaron 49 compuestos que representan el 95,33% del aceite. Los compuestos más representativos fueron: silvestreno (28,78%), canfeno (8,53%), β-felandreno (6,46%), z-neoridol (6,37%), aristolocheno (4,34%), adomandreno (3,69%), ɤ-copaeno (3,13%). La actividad antioxidante fue evaluada mediante dos métodos espectrofotométricos: DPPH test y ensayo de ABTS. Los valores obtenidos de IC50 fueron: 20,86 mg/mL para DPPH y 1,33 mg/mL para ABTS. La actividad antimicrobiana reveló mejores resultados de inhibición frente a las cepas de bacterias gram (-) Escherichia coli ATCC8739TM y Pseudomona aeruginosa ATCC9027TM con una CMI de 0,347 mg/mL para ambas. Frente a las levaduras el CMI para Candida albicans ATCC10231 fue 1,389 mg/mL y Candida tropicalis ATCC13803 0,347 mg/mL

Disputing "Gender" in Academia: Illiberalism and the Politics of Knowledge

This article explores the attacks to which gender studies programs in Central and Eastern Europe have been subject and the responses such attacks have elicited in the context of analogous phenomena in other parts of the world. The undermining of gender studies in recent years has been aggravated by the effects of the Covid‐19 pandemic that has exacerbated financial crises of educational institutions while also - in some contexts - providing cover for restrictions on academic freedom. Our specific focus here, however, is on how illiberal policies have limited the scope of academic gender studies, sometimes calling into question their very existence. To identify the modalities through which illiberal governments may narrow gender studies programs, we draw on Pirro and Stanley's analysis of illiberal policymakers' toolkit based on "forging," "breaking," and "bending." We consider these categories useful for our analysis but add a fourth: "de‐specification" - a purposeful submersion, or redefinition, of gender studies into other programs, such as family studies. Our purpose is not to present an exhaustive analysis but rather to delineate a framework for analyzing such attacks and the responses to which they have given rise, and then to indicate some questions for further research. As such, this article should be read as a work in progress that seeks to explicate the modalities of the attacks on gender studies in higher education to which contemporary illiberalism has given rise concomitantly with attacks on gender rights and emerging forms of resistance that bespeak the resilience of the gender academy
